What We Do

code shop (n) A small software engineering firm dedicated to supporting their local community.

When I started developing code back in 2007 there was this fun era around code shops. They were neighborhood places that dealt with mainly local businesses getting their wares and services online. Occasionally they might get a big fish out of the region but the big purpose was to support their community. As the internet grew, code shops adapted an expand or die mentality and were forced to drop their old clients to hunt bigger fish. Small shops had to turn to social media to be their digital front door, which hurts when those sites become walled gardens.

The intent of The Code Shop Around the Corner is to revitalize the old mindset of a local code shop to help a community. While the development team has experience with enterprise level applications that dealt with hundreds of thousands of transactions a day or start ups that needed to innovate at the speed of light to survive – that’s not what the focus of The Code Shop Around the Corner. We’re here to provide scalable options ranging from a simple web page with a phone number on it to a simple to update events calendar to a fully integrated e-commerce solution where you take control.

We don’t have “one size fits all” solutions. The Code Shop Around the Corner wants to make artisanal hand-made websites that suit your business’ needs.

What We Don't Do

Did you notice that pop up that asked for you to approve cookies?

Were you hassled by the digital assistant in the bottom corner wanting to give you automated answers?

Did you see AI mentioned in every other sentence so far so you knew for sure we used it?

Nope. We ain’t the place for any of that.

Sure, we can track just about everything, but that is disrespectful to your customers. We bet that people nowadays are sick of feeling like a product when all they want is to have a little help that only you can provide. The kind of help you got into your business to do. A lot has changed since I started my development career – not all for the best. There are some good things about the modern web but know that I’m not going to try to upsell you to get every new digital gizmo and gadget that is the latest craze on the internet. I keep up with modern tech, but The Code Shop Around the Corner is more about delivering solutions that help people.

Who I Am

I’m John “hex” Carter. For almost two decades I’ve been working in web development and I have done a lot. I’ve built e-commerce solutions for countless projects I’ve started up as well as for clients over time. I’ve worked with enterprise websites to manage social media automation and integrating modern authentication software into aging and (frankly) scary legacy systems. I’ve even built custom solutions for analyzing the life cycles of forklifts utilizing a LLM.

And then I got laid off.

I’m sick of playing the games of global tech companies. Working for them is no longer a stable option to support a family with how many layoffs happen. I’m striking it on my own and I figured the best way to try to build is by building locally.

So here I am, in Eastern Kentucky, trying to see if my community could use some help to build custom online solutions.
